André Rieu – Botany Bay (Melbourne)

Australia & New Zealand tour – October 2013.
André Rieu, the Johann Strauss Orchestra and Mirusia Louwerse performing Botany Bay.

In April 1770 a British ship named the Endeavour, under the command of Captain James Cook, became the first ship to reach the east coast of Australia. It anchored in what was later named Botany Bay. The song describes an English convict being transported to the penal settlement at Botany Bay in the late 18th and 19th centuries, when British convicts were transported to Australia since the prisons in Britain were over-crowded. Today Botany Bay is surrounded by the suburbs of Sydney.
